I first came up with the idea of "All Things Sound" during the Eighties. Back then it was simply a banner under which I could publish various articles and some music that I had written. I was also developing an interest in computing and the subsequent development of the internet offered an exciting prospect for the development of this method of publishing.

After retiring in 2006 from public service, I saw my opportunity to give much more time to my long-standing interest in web development. Building initially on contacts amongst friends and colleagues who wanted a "presence" on the web, the vision quickly grew to start a company that could provide sound technology and attractive design at affordable prices. The aim was particularly to encourage individuals and small businesses to develop through using the internet.

Having moved to the isolated splendour of the Trossachs in central Scotland, I had managed to find a spot with basic, broadband provision and discovered that the beautiful and unspoiled environment actively and constantly inspires and encourages the creative process. Living in a rural area also tends to encourage an attitude of "waste not, want not" and making do with whatever you have. I've always been attracted by the idea of the internet as a new "frontier": largely unfettered by the stifling growth of "health and safety", with a disproportionately large number of people who are actually willing to co-operate together and seek to build rather than tear down and destroy. Of course, there are some outlaws there - as anywhere else in the world - but there are also loads of people with vision and creativity, who thrive in a land of opportunity and are prepared to help each other.

"Open Source" software is a good example of this "can-do" attitude, and makes it possible for simple and reliable websites to be built without costing an arm and a leg. I value the personal touch of dealing with small businesses, so that has been my focus. Over the years, I've managed to get several small business or not-for-profit charities and organizations on the map. It is with great sadness, but no regret, that I now prepare to take a step back and concentrate exclusively on voluntary work.
